ABOUT ME

Picture
I was born in the city of Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazan, Honduras in Central America. Currently I reside in Louisville, KY (USA) and work for Luckett & Farley, Architects, Engineers and Construction Managers where I have had the opportunity to work in Industrial, Higher Education, Commercial and Healthcare projects.

Background

I started my primary education and attended bilingual school (Macris School) from Pre-K through 12, where I earned my U.S. High School diploma and my Honduran Bachillerato en Ciencias y Letras. The Honduran Secretary of Education (Secretaria de Educacion en el Despacho Presidencial) allows bilingual schools to offer both programs combined. Upon high school graduation, I continued my undergraduate education at CEDAC (Centro de Diseno, Arquitectura y Construccion) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. There I completed four years, 241 credits (U.V. by their Spanish acronym) and one year of thesis in the Architecture program. I graduated with a professional Bachelors of Architecture in July 2011.

Collaterally when I was working on my undergrad thesis,  I worked part time as a Teachers Assistant/Substitute for the American School of Tegucigalpa. I was accepted to continue my education in the Masters of Urban Design program at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) at their campus in Savannah, GA (USA).

I grew up in a city that is continuously affected by impacts of lack of urban planning, no public space, too much focus on vehicular infrastructure and susceptibility to climate change. This impacted my views in urban space and ultimately led me to chose it as a post-graduate degree.

Living in Savannah for two years, I began to understand public space in a way that I had never experienced before. Biking, walking and even jogging outside the gates of a home or a gym was something I had never done before. The incredible landscape in Savannah, the evolution of Oglethorpe's squares and grid plan inspired me. I officially became interested in everything involving the experience of the pedestrian in the city. This inspiration also triggered in a greater level, my appreciation for all things Honduras.

I have always been proud of my country, but living abroad has made me appreciate even more the potential of not just Honduras, but the entire Latin American region. Unfortunately, this is not always perceived and sometimes takes leaving it to understand the power of it all. This led me to dedicate my Masters of Urban Design thesis to my native city, Tegucigalpa. You can check out my thesis here or the entire book through the "view in book" link at the end of the Urban Design Thesis tab.

I titled my portfolio of work, 2 Degrees, to explain the different levels of the fields I have and love. I graduated with a degree in Architecture from Honduras and later a Masters of Urban Design degree in the United States. Throughout my portfolio and my thesis I wanted to explore the idea of identity and individualism and its importance in design. Most designers are usually entrapped in our own ways or following a specific trend that we forget the identity of it all. That was the component that drove me to start the search for it, the search for IDENTITY.
