TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY SHOTGUN HOUSING
The shotgun house traditionally referred to as one room wide and 3 to 4 rooms long has remained timeless in its form. The envelope of the building has evolved to represent the different settings and styles to which it was interpreted. All along the 19th and 20th centuries, the shotgun house was adapted to new (re)-emerging styles parting for a basic rectangular parti.
Twenty first century architecture has been mostly recognized possible by the early explorations of particular materials such as brick, stone, concrete, wood, metal and glass. Of course some of these had been in existence previously, but now they any modern building with metal and glass detailing has come to represent our time. In futuristic tone, this modern shotgun is interpreted as “the new newness” in utilizing these materials for its design and envelope.
Not to ignore the changes towards more green society and more environmentally interaction society, the 21st century shotgun should embrace these qualities. As we progress to a greener consciousness, this concept replaces one of the room sequences with a green area. The flow of the house now centers in a semi-private courtyard to serve as a space to provide greater natural ventilation, lighting and recreational space.
